Traditional Arab Handloom Weaving

Arab handloom weaving is a craft profession, a cultural and national heritage, and one of the faces of tourism in Lebanon. It has a prestigious history in our family, passed down for over 120 years under the name:

“The Loom of Sheikh Abou Hassan Mohammad Fayad & Sons.”
This craft received the UNESCO Craftsmanship Award in Paris in the year 2000 and has gained both local and international recognition.
Artisanal Production - The handcrafted items include:

  • Traditional Oriental abayas for men and women
  • Jackets, Shawls
  • Oriental furnishings (custom-made)
  • All pieces are woven using silk, wool, and cotton.

The loom used is a fully manual wooden machine, with no electrical components.
This artisanal craft has found its way into high society, with kings, princes, ambassadors, and other dignitaries proudly wearing its creations.

Origins & Family Legacy

This legacy began with our grandfather, Abou Mohammad Said Fayad, who practiced the craft throughout his life until his passing at the age of 63 (1886–1949). During his time, he wove linen and muslin fabrics, traditional religious abayas, and carpets.

His son, Sheikh Abou Hassan Mohammad Fayad, learned the craft at a young age and practiced it for 64 years. Through talent and creativity, he significantly modernized the work, inventing new weaving patterns and unique, exquisite fabrics—all through personal effort and dedication. His craftsmanship reached a high level of excellence, earning him the UNESCO award. He passed away on July 27, 2006.

His two children, Hassan and Houna, learned the craft early and practiced it passionately and skillfully. Each brought their own artistic touch to the designs, while faithfully reproducing their father's creations upon customer request, honoring the family legacy.

After Hassan’s passing in 2021, his sister Houna continues to carry on this historic craft, maintaining both its authenticity and outstanding quality to this day.

This type of craftsmanship is distinctive, unmatched, and rare in its quality.

Nestled at the foothill of the great Chouf Mountains, home to the majestic cedars of Lebanon, lays the ancient village of Maasser El Chouf. Archaeological ruins delineate an enigmatic history of storied civilizations that first inhabited this town well before the 5th century BCE.

Maasser El Chouf has been continually settled ever since. Throughout most of its history, Maasser had produced some of the finest wines and olive oil in all of the Middle East. In fact, the word Maasser in Arabic is synonymous with winery or more accurately “juicer.” Unfortunately, however, the village of Maasser El Chouf had stopped producing its brilliantly balanced wines for a number of decades. That all changed when one of Maasser’s sons, Ghassan Noujaim, took it upon himself to start creating artisanal wines that could rival the wines that flowed through the dining halls of the Roman gods themselves. Thus, St. Michael Winery was born.

“Al Fundok” kept the mission of a community project run by a non-profit foundation. A Place with a big soul. Its main vision is to encourage the rural tourism and create a sustainable income for the community.

We invested heavily in people of the local area, training them to acquire professional skills in hospitality. More than 40 families benefit from the hotel.

“Al Fundok” is not only a hospitality project. During your stay you will experience the real lifestyle of the local culture. Being partner with the Shouf Cedar Biosphere, “Al Fundok” is promoting the preservation of the environmental, cultural and culinary estate.
