Beneath the bustling streets of downtown Beirut lies a secret passage through centuries of history. The crypt beneath Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, uncovered during post-civil war restoration works in the 1990s, offers a unique window into the layers of civilizations that have shaped the city.
Opened to the public in 2011, the museum showcases the remains of six distinct historical periods. Suspended walkways allow visitors to explore the site without disturbing its archaeological treasures — from Byzantine mosaics to Mamluk tombs, medieval structures, and Ottoman-era water systems. Informative displays and a short documentary provide insights into the site’s religious and architectural evolution.
After this immersive journey underground, visitors can rest in the peaceful Garden of Forgiveness, surrounded by fragrant orange blossoms and a stunning view of the nearby Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque.
