Since the opening of its Beirut branch in 2005, Sfeir-Semler Gallery has become a major platform for cultural exchange in the Middle East. In addition to mounting the first one-person exhibitions in the region by Walid Raad, Akram Zaatari, Etel Adnan, Yto Barrada, Gabriel Kuri, and others, the gallery has hosted dynamic curatorial projects including Bidoun Magazine’s “NOISE”, Catherine David’s “In the Middle of the Middle”, and HomeWorks, a recurring forum on contemporary art based in Beirut. The gallery also works to bring its program to a global audience, participating in major art fairs around the world and collaborating with European and Middle Eastern art institutions to realize complex and ambitious exhibition projects, including the recent Documenta 13, in which 5 gallery artists were participants.
