From its very beginnings, contemporary art has confronted a fundamental paradox: how can one give form to what, by its very nature, resists representation? How can a work capture the trajectory of a thought, the lingering trace of a memory, or the fleeting texture of a dream?
This exhibition offers an exploration of the intimate geography of our inner worlds. Rather than seeking to reproduce reality, the works presented here draw from its psychological and emotional residues, giving them a second life through artistic transformation. At the heart of this investigation lies a poetic and philosophical observation: our experience of the world is inherently fragmented. We do not inhabit a continuous, linear reality, but a constant flow of discontinuous perceptions—fragments, impressions, fleeting images, and distorted recollections that become the raw material of consciousness.
Far from being insignificant remnants of experience, these fragments are part of the very substance of who we are. Their accumulation is not a form of chaos, but a process of sedimentation. Layers of experience overlap, compress, and transform one another, forming a fertile terrain in which joy and sorrow coexist, boundaries dissolve, and opposites converge.
The happiness of a moment already carries the melancholy of its passing, while past wounds can become the very foundation of present resilience. It is within this coexistence of contradictions that the works find their meaning. They become vessels for emotional complexity, resisting the temptation of simple oppositions in favour of a more complete and nuanced understanding of human experience.
Here, the dream is not presented as an escape from reality, nor as its absence. Instead, it emerges as a reality of its own—autonomous, intimate, and perhaps even more truthful than the world we perceive around us.
Johanne Issa was born in 1984 and lives and works in Beirut. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Cinema Studies in 2005, followed in 2008 by a Master's degree in Visual Arts, Photography, and Video Art from the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA).
Her practice explores the complex relationship between thought and image: how inner experience is translated into visual form, and how, in the process, it is transformed and distorted. Thought becomes image; image, in turn, becomes thought. Working across photography, painting, and ceramics, Issa investigates the shifting boundaries between perception, memory, imagination, and materiality.
Alongside her artistic practice, Johanne Issa has also served as Creative Director of the wine company Domaine des Tourelles, a creative and professional collaboration that has been ongoing for more than a decade.
