Hotel Palmyra

The Grand Hotel Palmyra in Baalbeck is one of Lebanon's oldest hotels, built in 1874 by the Greek Perikili Mimikakis, just opposite Baalbeck's stunning ruins.

Staying in the old Palymra involves taking a trip back in time. Walking into the hotel's entrance, the paint on the walls is not quite fresh anymore and your are instantly transformed into a traveler from the beginning of the last century. The old guest book of the hotel has witnessed a long list of illustrious visitors: European emperors, commanders of the Ottoman Empire, Lebanese and European politicians, painters, performers, singers, and writers. Prince Frederick Carl of Germany wrote in 1883: "When we finally came to the Hotel Palmyra, having spent eight nights of storm in tents, we found ourselves in paradise".

All the rooms' furniture is antique, from brass beds to wash stands which add to it an ambiance and a feeling rarely found in today's hotel culture.

A new wing has been added; an old Lebanese house renovated and converted into a restaurant, bar and five rooms in keeping with the traditional Palmyra style. The furniture remains antique but the bathrooms have new designs.

Lazzab Ecolodge was created to immerse visitors in the local life of the past: simple, nature-oriented, and deeply connected to the land. The experience combines cultural preservation, environmental care, and organic ingredients, reviving the spirit of rural mountain living in an authentic way.

The ecolodge features eight rooms, each equipped with a private bathroom and hot water. Guests sleep on floor mattresses, as locals once did, between straw-and-earth walls built in the style of old mountain homes. A shared indoor lounge and an outdoor gathering space offer calm places to relax and enjoy the fresh air.

Nature, silence, and absolute escape

With no cars, no neighbors, and no noise, the area offers a powerful sense of remoteness. From the lodge, guests can explore hidden trails, observe the region’s wildlife, follow old shepherd paths shaped by transhumance, and take in the geology of this elevated desert. At night, the sky explodes with stars in extraordinary clarity.

Local, seasonal, and traditional cuisine

Meals reflect the culinary heritage of Hermel’s highlands—simple, generous, and rooted in tradition. Breakfast includes labneh, makdous, olives, za’atar, and fried eggs.

Lunch features trout, salmon, salads, fries, mtabbal, and hummus.

Dinner varies daily and may include beans in oil, bulgur, lentils, vegetable gratin, potato kibbeh, potatoes with garlic and lemon, chickpeas with chard, mixed grains, rice with potatoes or chickpea stew, rice with beans and meat, or yogurt rice dishes.
