Archaeological site +2Standing alone on a mountain ridge in the Danniyeh region of northern Lebanon, the Roman temple of Sfireh remains a silent witness to a forgotten chapter of antiquity. Likely built in the 2nd or 3rd century AD, the temple is one of many rural sanctuaries left behind by the Roman Empire across the mountainous landscapes of ancient Syria.
The structure reflects a blend of Greco-Roman design and local influences. Its layout is rectangular, set on a high podium accessed by a central stairway, with a front façade marked by six elegant columns—likely of the Corinthian order. Side columns once surrounded the structure in a peripteral arrangement, echoing the grandeur of Roman temple design.
The inner sanctum, or naos, was probably dedicated to a now-unknown deity—possibly a local, imperial, or celestial figure, as commonly found in the mountain temples of Lebanon. Built entirely of local limestone, its finely cut stones were laid without mortar, showcasing the refined craftsmanship of the time.
Unrestored and still off the main tourist trail, the Sfireh temple offers a rare and poetic experience: that of encountering a forgotten monument suspended in time, set between earth and sky.
