In the Middle East, the word "Hima" refers to an area protected and managed by local communities, such as a municipalities. These communities decide what is allowed or not on the territory (camping, visits, controlled picking and hunting...).
The Hima of Hammana was created by the municipality in 1995. Today, it covers some 650,000 square meters. The municipality manages the site with the support of the SNPL (Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon) and the Salma project, which specializes in forest management in mountain areas.
Seven kilometers of trails crisscross these municipal lands. You can go from an altitude of 1300 to 1600 meters, from where you can contemplate breathtaking panoramas. In particular, we can observe the Syrian border, Chouf, Aley, the department of Baabda, but also Beirut, Metn Nord and Kesrouan.
The Hima of Hammana has about 40,000 trees. It's very pleasant to walk under them. They're part of an ecosystem that also includes animals, insects, reptiles and birds. Bird watching is one of the many activities in Hammana's Hima, since this area lies along the second largest bird migration route in the world. You need to be accompanied by local experts and guides: they will explain everything about the local biodiversity.
