Abu Bakr Al-Siddik Mosque

This Mosque is also known as Al-Omari Saint Mosque (it is not Al-Omari Great Mosque). According to the famous traveler Sheikh Abdul Ghani Al-Naboulsi, this mosque was built during the reign of Caliph Omar Bin Al-Khattab.

According to other sources, it was built in 1294 of our Christian era (693 Hegira year) or in 1343 (743 Hegira year). It was also named the Sea Mosque because of its proximity to the coast. As for the name Al-Dabbaghah, it is because of the proximity to the tannery. This mosque is located in the East side of Beirut Port, facing the tannery entrance; the under-ground includes warehouses.

It must be entered by stairs due to its elevation. During the French mandate, the Municipality of Beirut destroyed it in order to enlarge the roads. However, it was rebuilt in 1932 (1352 Hegira year) and named the Mosque of Abou Bakr Al-Siddiq (May Allah be pleased with him).

This mosque was damaged during the Lebanese war (1975-1990). It was restored by the General administration of the Islamic Pious Foundations (Waqf) that reopened it to prayers in 1999 (1420 Hegira year).
