Deir El Salib is a challenging place to reach, because only the bravest can travel the winding road leading to the monastery of the holy valley, which is among the most difficult to access.
You will have to walk along a secondary track known to be particularly narrow and steep and which extends in a zigzag path towards the sides of a cliff in order to finally glimpse the entrance of this rocky place.
But this challenge does not stop the more adventurous visitors, who discover in these places an exceptional site entirely dug in the mountainous rock.
Here you can visit the remains of a double apse church and the cells that it hangs on, or the ruins of four hermitages located in caves at the lower end of the rock face.
The church is particularly well known for its frescoes and medieval paintings, some of which date back to the 13th century and which will attract the attention of several books and articles from the middle of the 20th century. However, you will find that acts of vandalism or the erosion have unfortunately led to the degradation of these frescoes.
Even if the site has long been neglected and needs a serious renovation, you will not regret having braved nature to discover this place with its humble and wild charm.
