The church was originally built in 1732 but was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1759, which also destroyed all the houses in Jezzine. It was rebuilt but suffered another setback when it was destroyed by fire during an uprising in 1845. However, during the Mutasarrifate of 1860-1918, Jezzine was established as the capital of the Caza, and the church was rebuilt in 1868. During its reconstruction, the inhabitants of Jezzine made a 2km chain to pass stones from the stone quarry to the church to aid the builders. Today, the church stands as a symbol of the resilience and determination of the people of Jezzine.
