The Grand al Omari Mosque

This mosque was named Al-Omari to pay homage to the Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab. It is also known under the name of Foutouh Al-Islam Mosque (the conquests of Islam). It was turned into a church under the domination of the Franks before being reconquered by Saladin in 1187 (583 year of the Hegira). The Franks regained it another time and turned it into a cathedral from 1197 to 1291 (593-690 Hegira years). Afterwards, it was definitively conquered and converted into a mosque by Emir Sunjur, under the reign of King Ashraf Khalil, son of Sultan Qalaoun. Therefore, it became the biggest mosque in the city. Its façade was restored in 1931.
