The Great Umayyad Mosque
Standing tall at the entrance of the acropolis is a place of worship that dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries of the Omayyad Era. The Great Mosque was constructed atop the remains of a Byzantine church dedicated to Saint John, which was in turn built over the ruins of a Roman forum. During the construction of the mosque, granite and limestone columns from previous generations and buildings were repurposed. The mosque also features a square minaret located at the north-west intersection of the courtyard.
