Debbane Palace Museum

Tucked in the historic heart of Sidon’s old city, Debbane Palace is a striking example of late Ottoman architecture in Lebanon. Built in the early 18th century, the palace combines modest external features with a richly decorated interior, where visitors are greeted with intricate stucco work, painted wood ceilings, marble panels, and traditional mosaics.

The residence is centered around a grand iwan opening onto an inner courtyard, reflecting the elegant urban lifestyle of prominent families of the time. Now open as a museum, the palace allows visitors to step into the domestic world of Sidon’s aristocracy and appreciate the cultural influences that shaped its design.

A narrow staircase leads to the rooftop terrace, offering sweeping views over Sidon’s old town and the sea. As one of the few remaining traditional urban houses in Lebanon, Debbane Palace is a hidden gem for heritage lovers and cultural explorers.

Soap Museum in Saida

Located in the southern Lebanese city of Saida (Sidon), the Soap Museum offers a fascinating journey into the world of traditional soap making. Set within beautifully restored ancient vaulted chambers, the museum reveals the full story of soap — its history, its uses, and the artisanal techniques behind its production.

Visitors can explore the various stages of olive oil–based soap manufacturing, learning about the diversity of forms, scents, and properties of traditional soap. How is soap made? When was it first invented? These questions — and more — are answered through engaging displays and live demonstrations of traditional soap-making methods.

The museum also highlights the rich hamam (bathhouse) culture of the region. Historically, the site functioned as a soap workshop, active from the 17th to the 20th century, and built alongside the Khan al-Saboun (Soap Caravanserai), which dates back to the 13th century. The factory remained in operation until 1975.
