UNESCO recognized Baalbek as a world heritage site in 1984. Later, in 1998, the Museum of Baalbek opened its doors. It contains remains of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic ages, such as around 20 statues, small artifacts, mosaics, ceramics, sarcophagi and other funerary items found in the tunnel under the Jupiter temple and in the Ayoubid Tower.
Explanations about the archeological sites of Baalbek are also provided, with the help of old pictures and excavation plans and drawings. The explanations are as important as the objects displayed. The museum is a must see if you are interested in the Lebanon’s rich history and heritage.
