Antique Press and Reservoirs

Located on a hill beneath the 150-year-old Church of Mar Takla, one of the Antique Press and Reservoirs of the region is a testament to the local wine-making tradition. Carved into the hill's stone, the press comprises three reservoirs connected by passages that allow grape juice to pass from one reservoir to another. This ancient wine press dates back 150 years, when locals rented lands from the Maronite Monasticism to cultivate grapes amidst the beautiful landscapes that beckon visitors to explore.

Jabal al Rihane Biosphere ReserveBiosphere Reserve +1

Jabal al Rihane Biosphere Reserve

Covering an area of approximately 18430 hectares and at an altitude ranging between 270 meters in the south and 1500 meters above sea level in the north, is Jabal al Rihane Biosphere Reserve. It stretches from Mizyara south to Jezzine and Niha villages, and spans across the southern part of Mount Lebanon overseeing the Mediterranean Sea to the west as well as the Beqaa valley to the east.

This biosphere reserve is a true patchwork of different ecological systems that largely embody the natural greenery of vegetation forests, grass, bush and a large community of Mediterranean plants and animals occupying the region.

A prevalent trait of this biosphere reserve is the presence of various mountain summits like the Jabal Sujud, Jabal Safi, Jabal Bir Kallab, and Jabal Bourqab that reach heights of 1200, 1300, 1360 and 1300 meters accordingly. The Reserve presents a breathtaking limitless view, countless ancient oak trees that are more than 500 years old, rivers, caves and agricultural fields.

This green nature area amid broad and vast bare lands has public municipal territories as well as private lands. The location is ideal for migratory birds and the reserve hosts 168 different bird species, 15 of them are threatened to become extinct. The mammals that live in the vicinity, range from bats to wolves and hyenas and amount to a total of 34 species, 11 of them are globally threatened to become extinct. Most of these mammals belong to the Middle East region. Furthermore, there are 44 local plant species in the reserve, some of which cannot be found in other parts of the country.

As a general point, Jabal Al Rihane Bio Sphere Reserve has a low population count of approximately 24,000 individuals. Half of them leave the province during the winter season and live in the suburbs of the capital of the country, Beirut, to have improved accessibility to better schools, jobs and warmer weather.

Future plans for Jabal Al Rihane biosphere reserve revolve around portraying the reserve as an outstanding example for BR’s in the Middle East and Mediterranean scope. A wise and strong management with persistent efforts on visitations, community affinities, environment education, business initiatives and fundraising schemes is essential for the achievement of this goal.

Saints Peter and Paul MonasteryMonastery +1

Saints Peter and Paul Monastery

The Monastery of St. Peter & Paul in Qattine is situated on a hill with breathtaking views of valleys and mountains. Its establishment coincided with the Christian presence in Jezzine. Bishop Gabriel Awad founded the monastery and later gave it to the Antonine Order on March 1, 1761. Bishop Awad purchased the estate and endowments of the monastery and built wooden houses and a small wooden church north of the current monastery. The monks who followed him, known as the Worshipping Monks, inhabited the monastery and built a separate one for nuns. The monks managed the monastery's livelihood, which at the time was half of Qattine's farms, located on some of Qaituli and Qattine lands in a place called "The River Island". The monks partnered with the feudal landlords, the original landowners, and brought Christian families from North and Mount Lebanon to the South after the Ain Dara Battle in 1711. In 1756, Bishop Semaan Awad ordained Priest Sarkis Awad as the Pastor in the Antonine Order, and he intervened with Bishop Gabriel Awad to hand over the monastery in Qattine to the Antonine Order.

The monastery and its property were granted with the knowledge and endorsement of the bishop's partner, Sheikh Fares Jumblatt, who agreed in 1758 to transfer the title deed from the bishop to the monks of the St. Isaiah compound after receiving the rest of the price.

Church of Saint John the BaptistArchitecture & Style +1

Church of Saint John the Baptist

Explore the byzantine architecture of the Church of Saint John the Baptist. With a vault inside that is seen as a masterpiece of the region’s traditional architecture, the church has been a long-lasting discussion of its true birth. The village elders believed it was built in 1555 while a sign on the door dates the construction 200 years after that. Others say the original church was situated a hundred meters away from the present one, and that it was built in 1536. The church once contained a cross, chandeliers and lanterns that are said to have been a present from Napoleon himself and has been used for their baptisms, weddings, and burials.

Haytoura Cliff

Overlooking the green valleys of Jezzine district in South Lebanon, the Haytoura cliff is a stunning natural site where dramatic geology meets preserved biodiversity and breathtaking scenery. Perched on a rocky outcrop at over 1,180 meters above sea level, the cliff rises above pine-covered hills and ancient footpaths.

Formed from Jurassic and Upper Cretaceous limestone, the cliff reveals the geological history of Lebanon, shaped by the uplift of the Mount Lebanon range and major regional faults like the Roum Fault. Its karstic formation and rugged structure make it a striking example of the country’s mountainous terrain.

Home to a wide variety of birds and endemic plants, the Haytoura cliff is an ideal destination for hiking, birdwatching, and quiet reflection. It invites visitors to connect with a deeper, wilder Lebanon — where every stone tells a story that spans millions of years.
